Open Letter To Caroline County Residents

To all Caroline County Residents,

At the conclusion of this article I will ask for volunteers (I want you to understand why I am writing what I am writing). You may not be the right person to ask, but you might know the right person I should be asking.

Gone are the days when governments ruled in secret, when political parties huddled in smoke filled rooms plotting the course of our parties and the country as a whole; when only the oldest, wealthiest, and most well known families controlled the world.

We’ve entered an age of instant communication and a near universal access to technology.

For those who want to be involved, who want to make a difference in their community, it has never been easier. You’ve never had more access to your governments and to your elected officials than you do today. Despite the fact that we have moved away from physical community with one another, we’ve still got tremendous access to each other’s digital lives.

If the only people involved in politics are the people in government, the people who benefit directly from government, and the people who simply love politics in general (weirdos, like me), how does that benefit you? We need you to be involved.

In Caroline County, it really doesn’t matter whether we’re Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, or Independents. Unlike State and Federal governments, Caroline County actually has to produce demonstrable results for the people who live here. They rule directly on the issues that impact us the most. Jeff Sili is the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and the Chairman of the Republican Party in Caroline County. Floyd Thomas is the senior member of the Board of Supervisors and the Chairman of the Democrat Party in Caroline County. I’ve never seen Democrat or Republican come up in a Board of Supervisors meeting. Truly – not once.

In Bowling Green and Port Royal, your Town Counsels are responsible for establishing the kind of business climate and revenue your towns enjoy. If there seem to be a lack of good ideas, it may be because you haven’t shown up to offer yours. Show up and offer yours. If you are unhappy with your town, there will be people running for Town Council (in November I believe).

National and State politics tend to require a greater sacrifice of time, because there is so much going on and there is so much to know, but there are people on both sides of the aisle in Caroline who know what’s going on and can help catch you up to speed. It can feel overwhelming at times, I know. The State of Virginia makes decisions everyday that effects your county and towns, not to mention you as individuals, families, and communities. There are people in Caroline County who understand what’s happening at the state and federal level too – and to be honest, if you are on their side, they’ll help you get involved.

I am a Republican, but so what? The Democrats on our local Board of Supervisors have never rebuffed my attempts to speak with them. How many Democrats in Mr. Sili’s district have found him to be utterly accessible as well? I’ve registered Republicans in Mr. Floyd Thomas’ district who’ve told me that whenever they have a problem, they know they can speak with him. In election years, we’ll fight and fight as hard as we can. In between, we come together and support Caroline County.

At the end of the day, that’s what our Constitutional Republic was meant to be and you can be a part of that.

Here at Pendleton Penn, I try to keep you informed on what goes on at our local Board of Supervisors Meetings. I have a full time job and I am active in campaigns, and it is a sacrifice, to be sure, to attend every BOS Meeting. However, I happily provide that service.

Is there anyone in this county who would like to cover our School Board? To write about it – and if disinterested in writing about it, at least share the notes from those meetings so that someone else could write about it?

Is there anyone in Caroline County who would like to Register Voters? Who would like to work at your precincts on election day? Who would like to host get-together’s at your home to discuss local, state, or national issues? Are you a Republican looking to get involved? Or a Democrat? Or an Independent, frustrated that you feel like, because you aren’t one or the other, you don’t have a voice at all? There are Republican and Democrat activists in Caroline County who would love to hear from you and love to help you get involved. And for the Independents in Caroline County, if you really do want to be involved, reach out, I will help you.

I want to make it clear, that in Caroline County, you have a voice and you have access and you can be involved. You have the same rights and access as a Virginian and as an American to both your State and National governments.

I believe that civic duty is important and am willing to help anyone interested in getting involved to get involved.

You can email me at stevenbrodietucker@gmail.com. I will respond. You are not unimportant or insignificant. You matter. In fact, you could make the difference going forward.
